Every month, over 37k love-drunk couples excitedly search keywords relating to “wedding photographers near me,” hoping to find a wedding photographer that can perfectly capture their big day.

A few of these love-struck couples even live in your local area and would be more than happy to do business with a wedding photographer like yourself.

But there’s one big problem: These searchers have no idea you even exist!

Well, it’s my mission to change that.

I want to help you attract as many local couples searching for wedding photographers as possible — something that is certainly doable with a few simple tweaks to your marketing.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through optimizing your online presence for search engines like Google and Bing, driving more traffic to your website while picking up a few extra clients along the way.

Ready to learn SEO for wedding photographers?

If so, let’s begin.

GMB optimization for wedding photography SEO

A screenshot of Google My Business listings from San Francisco, CA wedding photographers.

GMB stands for Google My Business.

It’s the local listings that pop up in the maps box when you search for a local service.

Optimizing your GMB listing is crucial to attracting clients when doing SEO for your wedding photography business.

If you don’t already have a GMB listing, create one now (it’s free!).

The information you provide will help Google understand your business better, showing Google that you’re a good choice for a wedding photographer.

You must complete your GMB profile thoroughly, though — finishing every part is essential if you’d like to rank higher in the GMB listings and search results.

Here is a list of my most helpful Google My Business SEO tips for wedding photographers

  • Include at least 15 portfolio photos on your GMB profile and add two images weekly.
  • Respond to all reviews, whether positive or negative.
  • Write a compelling description of your business that is concise and persuasive.
  • Choose a proper GMB category (wedding photographer) for your business.
  • Post to your GMB profile regularly about announcements, updates and special offers.

With these GMB tactics, you’ll enjoy better rankings in both the GMB listings and in the search engines.

Your GMB listing is one of the most critical elements of optimizing your SEO.

Make sure you take the time to maximize your listing, an endeavor that is worth every ounce of effort.

SEO for wedding photographers requires the right keywords

A screenshot of traffic data from SEMrush.

SEO is built around keywords.

A keyword is what your potential client types in Google when searching for a wedding photographer.

You need to determine your main keyword and a few minor keywords to target.

Here are a few options to get you started…

Best keywords for wedding photographers

  • wedding photographer [city] [state]
  • [city] [state] wedding photographer
  • wedding photographer [county]
  • [county] wedding photographer

Now, these cities and counties don’t just have to be your exact location – they can be any location you serve.

But how do you know which keywords are the best? Which keywords should you go after?

Don’t worry; it’s pretty simple to determine your target keywords.

Check out Ahrefs’ free keyword tool (no sign-up required).

Take your list of potential keywords and put each into the tool – this will give you search volume numbers to consider.

Now, rank your potential keywords from highest volume to lowest.

Choose 3 to 4 target keywords, one being your primary keyword.

You now have your target keywords, so we are ready to continue on.

Using your new wedding photography SEO keywords

A screenshot of a wedding photography service's H1 heading and other text that is SEO optimized.

Now that you’ve determined your target keywords, you must use them.

SEO works by placing your target keywords on your website – not too frequently or infrequently – and Google and Bing take that as a sign that you serve those areas.

The key places to use your keywords are in headings – most importantly, your H1 heading.

Your H1 heading is the main heading on your website. It is often the most prominent text on your page that acts as the title of your page.

Edit it to include your highest volume target keyword.

For example, if your target keyword was “NYC wedding photographer,” you would want to use an H1 heading such as “Simply the Best NYC Wedding Photographer.”

If you aren’t skilled at editing your website, you can hire a web professional to make the edits pretty inexpensively – these edits only take a few minutes.

Besides headings, you should include your keywords in the rest of the text on your website.

One of my most important SEO tips for wedding photographers is to not use your keywords too often.

This is referred to as keyword stuffing, and it hurts SEO.

Google doesn’t like keyword stuffing because it sees it as trying to game the algorithm – a bad idea.

Instead, less is more.

Write your website’s text naturally while sprinkling in a few keywords to boost SEO.

NAP consistency for wedding photography SEO success

A graphic explaining the SEO concept of NAP with a fictitious plumbing company.

NAP is an acronym for name (your business name), address and phone number.

It is important because Google scans the internet and looks for consistency in your various NAP occurrences.

Every place on the internet where your NAP is recorded, such as listings like Yelp, Google My Business, business directories and more, Google checks that your NAP or contact information is the same in all NAPs.

You must ensure every NAP on the internet has your latest business name, address and phone number.

Why does Google care?

Google cares because it wants assurance that your contact information is correct to avoid the unpleasant experience of someone having the wrong contact information.

One of my SEO tips for wedding photographers is to keep track of all the places on the internet where you have posted your contact information.

This ensures that if you have to change your contact information, you can do so everywhere to avoid inconsistent NAPs.

So, take some time to make sure your NAP is correct and consistent across the internet – it’s time well spent.

Track your SEO progress with Google Analytics

How do you know how many visitors your SEO efforts are attracting? Want a report on exact traffic numbers?

Well, you’re in luck!

If you haven’t already, connect your website to Google Analytics (another free resource).

Although intimidating looking, it’s pretty straightforward to see your traffic stats without digging into the complicated stuff (unless you’re feeling brave).

Google Analytics is essential because it lets you see your SEO performance – traffic stats and origins, visitor demographics and more.

This is important because you can understand the results of your SEO campaign, allowing you to improve on past performance.

It’s relatively easy to set up and use, but a web professional can assist if you need a little help; it should only take them 15 to 30 minutes at most.

Conclusion

By now, I hope you’ve learned how to boost your wedding photography website’s SEO through these few simple tactics.

The techniques do work if applied.

I encourage you to go out and implement them now to see their benefits.

SEO is essential to your long-term success as a wedding photographer.

You’ll obtain more clients with no advertising budget – just sweat equity!

Doing SEO as a wedding photographer will result in a stream of business from the search engines and your GMB listing.

That about wraps it up.

Thank you for taking the time to read my article.

I hope it provided you with insights into the inner workings of the search engines and how to rank higher.

Thanks again,
Chet Matthews
